dry hair

Unfortunately, due to a lack of humidity, maintaining sleek, glossy hair during the Joburg summer months can be as much of a challenge as staying calm in peak traffic. Luckily, the Hair Clinic International has some tips for you to keep in mind so that you can let your hair down with pride this festive season:

  • Try not to wash your hair too often. Let’s face it, a bad hair day, is a bad hair day. Washing it won’t make a difference, and often we are uber critical about just how bad our hair day really is (when others won’t even notice unless you point it out!). When humidity is low, washing your hair every day can further deplete what’s left of its moisture. 2 – 3 times per week would be ideal. Also, be sure to rinse hair in cold water to close the shafts and lock in moisture.
  • Use plenty of conditioner. Every time you wash your hair, apply conditioner generously. Without it, you’re likely to start sporting a wild, frizzy hairdo, especially once the summer rains make their presence known… and, let’s face it, the 80s are long gone. Heat induced frizzy hair is never a good look!
  • Avoid excessive heat styling. Whenever possible, allow your hair to air dry. Also try your best to use your straightener for special occasions only as heat styling can cause the hair to dehydrate and break. Fortunately, Hair Clinic International’s Hair 2.0 Leave in Conditioner will be sure to help prevent this.
  • Use a heat protecting product. If you can’t help but make use of heat styling tools, protect your locks by using a protective product beforehand. Jojoba oil is an excellent choice when used sparingly (too much can result in a nasty greasy sheen)

At the end of the day, keeping hair in good condition during a typical Highveld summer is all about taking extra care and using the right products. Unfortunately, all too often we wake up looking like we’ve been dragged through a hedge backwards. Bad hair days are unavoidable. In these cases, just grab some clips or hair ties (not too tight now), to help flatten out the metaphorical bird’s nest, or get stylish and top it with a trendy cap or a hat. At least then you will have it covered when the afternoon Highveld storm and rains set in! Enjoy the festive season, folks.
